Chimney for wood stove? Which type is better? Through the roof tripple wall stainless steel or outside block?
The stove is a Jotul 118 and burns wood like a cigar, one end to the other, because of the air flow design--rated between 25 and 55,000 btu, and 8 hr burn time, i was also concerned about creosote build up. I live in a mobile home and want to be as safe as possible with the chimney type and instalation. Thanks so much for any suggestions you may have !!!
I work for a fireplace store, we sell and install (20 years), I also have two stoves in my home. You do not want triple wall pipe, it's rated for around 1700 degrees, you want double wall insulated, it is rated for about 2600 degrees and requires 2" clearance around it (check any brand you purchase to make sure, that is what we carry), it is stainless steel lined. Go straight up if you can, better draft and easier to clean. It should be cleaned once a year and burn nothing but good dry hard wood (oak), the hotter you are burning, the less creosote, slow burn is more creosote. Jotul is a good stove, make sure you meet all the clearances for the stove, single wall pipe inside requires 18" from any combustible, close clearance inside pipe (black double wall requires 6" from any combustible and you will need a heat shield on the stove. Most places require outside air to be connected to the stove in a mobile home. Once installed correctly, not a problem, keeping the pipe clean is a major! Contact me if I can help you, I am in TEXAS........ If you follow all installation instructions and DON'T cheat, you are safe! OH, Check to see if your stove is MOBILE HOME APPROVED... I would recommend a GOOD steel double wall stove for mobile home.
You stove has 9" clearance off the back with single wall inside pipe (I would still use rear heatsield) and 3" with Double Wall inside pipe and rear heatshield. 35" on the sides, you may want to check out the optional side heatshields available for that model. I only see that the F400, F500 and F600 are mobile home approved, the only difference is outside air connection, I would be more concerened about clearances than outside air, when you do it yourself you can get by without it, check codes in your area (if nessesary). Make sure you are sitting on a non-combustable pad.
